Susan Philipsz @ Theseus Temple, Vienna

The sound installation “War Damaged Musical Instruments (Pair)”, 2015 by Susan Phillipsz is currently on view at the Theseus Temple the contemporary art location organised by the Kunsthistorische Museum in Vienna. Listening to the short video on the website of the Kunsthistorische I feel drawn back to the Berlin Biennale 2004 where Phillips showed a similar work on an old Garnisonen Cemetry curated by Marizio Cattelan and Ali Subbotnick back then. The installation in Vienna has been curated by Jasper Sharp, curator of the last Austrian pavilion at the Venice Biannial in 2013.

From what I associate with the sound, the horns used for the installation have from an historical background been used in early days at the cemetery when important people were buried so they could make themselves heard in case the would wake up in their graves. Let’s hope that the installation by Susan Phillipsz has a more light-hearted approach this time. Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to
start my own blog (well, almost…HaHa!) Wonderful job.
I really enjoyed what you had to say, and more than that, how you presented it.
    Too cool!

  3. Hi there, Thanks for your comment! You made my day! We have a programme called Art Ark that starts soon where we offer workshops and as well participation for participants accross te world inviting them to visit an exhibition in their hometown and write about it on our website. As a guideline we recommend to take five pictures and evolve a story using these images. E.g. a story about a lover that is threatened like in the story of Judith and Holophernes who demands the head of someone she despises from her husband the king. In the next picture someone could warn the person threatened and take measures to get out of that problem as the tale is often only a warning not entailing an immediate death. We encourage to try to write in a style that others might want to visit the exhibition you viewed themselves, therefore use a journalist style. At the end of the year we publish a little magazine given to participants as a thank you.

Would be great to have you as a participant therewith you could engage in blog writing yourself!

    All my best,

    Daniela
