Eduard Winklhofer at Kunsthaus Koeflach, Austria

The Austrian artist Eduard Winklhofer is currently presenting his work in a solo exhibition at the Kunsthaus Koeflach in Austria.

Winklhofer presents a body of work between kinetic soaring sculptures that involve blades often found in rural areas making us feel like being in a wood work company or in a chain saw battle when both saws are active.

The sculptural objects remind of early works by Erwin Wurm, where he placed cloth trousers in little vitrines and at the same time have more facets by involving the kinetic component.

The felt suit in one of the sculptures brings Beuys to mind as it is free-hanging from above in a plastic cabinet as well bordered by moving saws, however it has a more current approach as well as linking the work and the exhibition itself in the rural little town Koeflach.

A wall work with a black circular space surrounded by books only visible from the front draws us near to the installation only to find that the black Space is indented creating a similar feeling like a mirror work by British-based artist Anish Kapoor.

A glass work spelling the word ‘Echo’ draws our attention towards the little mountain shaped lettering of broken glass  that again has an inherent approach of distraction to it leaving us with the result of shattered but neatly assembled glass parts. Is it the distraction or the result we should focus on comes to mind.

The last part of Winkelhofer’s presentation are clothes like found in charity shops assembled on a glass structure like pages in a book reminding of donations to be shipped off to countries in need. Are the glass tiles a reference to the book installation this time with open pages, still without content but reminding us on the fragility of wealth and high quality life versus poverty and deprived life. Are we the ones in need of fresh clothing one day might be written on the see through glass tiles by our imagination.

The exhibition by Eduard Winklhofer is on show until 3rd November 2017 and is definitely worth a visit in case someone drops by the little town Koeflach still for certain present on the International art map which is proven by Winklhofer’s solo presentation.
